Committees

The Court of the Livery Company is the governing body of the Company. There are then a number of committees established to assist it in the day to day running of the Company.

General Purposes Committee
This is chaired by the Prime Warden of the Company, together with the other Wardens, the Immediate Past Prime Warden and the next two potential Under Wardens. The job of this committee is to review all applications for Membership received by the Company and to make recommendations as to their progress to the Court. They also look at the longer term strategy of the Company and advise the Court on issues of policy etc. There are three sub committees to the GPC who report directly to it; these are

Membership
This is tasked by the GPC committee with interviewing all prospective new Members of the Company and making recommendations as to how these applications should be progressed. They are also responsible for mentoring all new Freemen of the Company who have not yet obtained their Freedom of the City of London through that process so that they can then take the Livery of the Company.

Nominations and Appointments
This committee makes recommendations to the GPC on the appointment of Wardens, Court Assistants and Stewards. In general the Company tries to have a 5 to 6 year plan in place for progression to becoming a Warden so that Court Assistants can plan their time accordingly. The Court consists of a maximum 21 Assistants below the chair. All Past Prime Wardens may remain on Court indefinitely if they wish. When there are vacant places on the Court the Committee may recommend a Liveryman for appointment to the Court as an Assistant based on their support for the Company and its Charitable Trust. All Court Assistants must also have served as a Steward to be eligible for consideration. There are 8 Stewards whose role is to assist the Clerk in the smooth running of the Company's events and Court meetings. They are lead by the Chief Steward and each serve for 2 years. Any Liveryman of more than one year's standing may ask to be considered for appointment as a Steward. They are issued with a Stewards' Club badge and each year there is a Stewards' Club dinner.

Trade Committee
Chaired by the Honorary Trade Advisor this committee acts as the liaison between the Company, the basketmaking trade and the Basketmakers' Association. Its members include representatives from the Yeoman members and the BA.

Finance Committee
Chaired by a member of the Court, this committee is tasked with administering the finances of the Company. This includes the setting of a draft budget each year for approval by Court, production of the Company accounts and overseeing the investment of the Company's capital fund.

Livery Committee
Chaired by the Upper Warden, this committee consists of the Wardens, the next potential Under Warden and the Stewards of the Company. The committee is responsible for working with the Upper Warden on the formulation of the events programme for the year. This may involve some Stewards being requested to undertake research into various potential ideas and working with the Clerk to develop these. The committee also acts as a liaison point with the Livery, providing valuable feedback on the general running of the Company and ideas for its future development.
